Create a cohesive book cover series for fantasy classic The Lord of the Rings 70th Anniversary Edition.
Process
The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy classic that is regarded as one of the greatest novels of all time. It has been reprinted many times and has been translated into at least 38 languages.
I went through the process of thumbnailing some ideas for the first book, and taking a few of them into Illustrator/Photoshop to work them out. This concept was my favourite and not something I had seen before from previous Lord of the Rings Covers during my research. It is a reference to The Rhyme of the Rings - part of which is inscribed on the ring of power.
Since there was already an established style, it was fairly simple to adapt it from the first novel cover to the second and third. I was just able to think about reflecting the content of the novels in the cover while maintaining the style.
